For me, the the 1983 Best Picture award ranks as one of the all-time most disappointing.

Yes, Rain Man (1988) was good, but I’d have preferred a win for Dangerous Liaisons (1988), Cinema Paradiso (1988), or Die Hard (1988). Platoon (1986) was great too, but I’d have opted for Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) or Stand by Me (1986). The only ‘Best Picture’ winner from the ‘80s I fully support is Milos Forman’s win for Amadeus (1984). But even then, The Terminator (1984) has an equal claim on the top prize, since I think it’s James Cameron’s best film.

For me, the the 1983 Best Picture award ranks as one of the all-time most disappointing. The Right Stuff is the far better film to Terms of Endearment. I rank The Right Stuff as one of the top 20 films of all time.
