I share both your worries and your excitement over the new space race. I grew up in the 1960s, pretty much along with the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs. The launch of Apollo 11 and the moon landing occurred in the month of my 13th birthday. I was so proud of my country, even as I was horrified by assassinations and the war in Vietnam. I have wondered what it would be like for the next generations growing up in an America without such a lofty goal. Although accomplishing that remarkable feat certainly didn't put any backbone into the leadership that followed.
