If someone likes having notebooks (or folders) and the general three-pane UI of Evernote, but don't want to pay such a high subscription, I'd suggest looking at Notejoy, which is primarily for collaboration and team work, but they have a $40 a year solo plan. Like Evernote, Notejoy is available on many different devices, and syncs flawlessly.
