In my view, Saving Private Ryan is the greatest war film ever made. I saw it in the theater three times when it was released, including once with my father, a World War II veteran (though he served in the Pacific in the U.S. Navy). It is a stunning film, and so much fuller in nuance (as you say) than most people seem to want to give it credit for, basically reducing it to a visceral film (and if that is all it was, it would still be great). I appreciate you reminding us about all the other qualities Spielberg imbued it with. Thank you.
