Judging earlier generations by our standards is problematic. For example, do we in the United States tear-up the Declaration of Independence because it was written by a man who owned slaves? Should Lincoln have not used the Declaration's rousing call for equality as the bedrock of his push for the Emancipation Proclimation?

Much more productive would be for us to imagine how future generations will judge us. Will they say, it's nice they stopped watching Woody Allen films while climate change caused so much death and destruction, and the extinction of thousands of species?
