Not disputing your claim that Battle Cry of Freedom is the best single-volume history of the Civil War. For those looking for a slimmer book, I'd suggest This Hallowed Ground, by Bruce Catton. Again, not saying this is as comprehensive as Battle Cry, just that it is half the pages and does a good job.
