Over 40 years ago, me and some comrades biked the circumference of the U.S. (bending for a short way into Canada). It was the experience of my life. I often wonder how doing a cross-country trip today would be different (more vehicles, fewer places to just go and find a camping spot, etc.). I will be eager to read your book about your experience.
BTW, on our return leg, we rode along the Oregon Trail in the section of Oregon you're in. I recall marvelling at the fact that the distance we could cover on our bikes in an hour was roughly the equivalent of the distance the pioneers were able to cover in a day. As you say, there's nothing micro about that.
