Sometimes it isn't a matter of better or worse, but the movie becomes more digestible. For example, I could only get through about half of The World According to Garp, because the character of Garp eluded me. But in the movie, Robin Williams perfectly (to me anyway) personified Garp that I could then appreciate the story and the character.
