While I entirely agree that Alien is a horror film, I also think it doubles as an outstanding piece of science fiction, asking the question if mankind even belongs in space. With that perspective, "alien" refers to the humans tucked into their inadequate flying tin can of a space ship, poking their noses where they don't belong.
