Your journey through writing software sounds similar to mine. My first computer was a Compaq "portable" PC. I had WordStar. DOS is a very nice OS for writing. Not frilly and fast as lightning. My favorite writing app of all time ran on DOS. Grandview was an outlining app that was also a very capable word processor. Sadly, it was never ported to Windows. Eventually, I made the move for my personal computing to Mac just to be able to use Scrivener. Ironically, however, I find Scrivener has too many bells and whistles for most of the writing I do.
